At Buttonwillow School Districts Board Meeting last night (June 8), a plan was put in place to open for the 2020-2021 school year. It was decided that the start of the school year will move up one week with students starting on August 5, 2020. The calendar will be extended 2 weeks and the students will end on June 10, 2021. These changes were made to accommodate the addition of a three week winter break that begins on Saturday, November 21, 2020 and ends on January 3, 2021. School will resume on January 4, 2021. There will be an on line winter session that will give the students an opportunity to work with teachers on areas where they may need assistance. The program will look to accelerate student learning while giving the students an opportunity to learn something new.
The reason for this change is the concern of a second wave of COVID-19 when the early winter period sets in. Because of illness and some travel to other countries attendance drops 6-10% during the 3 weeks between Thanksgiving and Winter Break.
The attached infographics and video from Superintendent Packard explains how the school will open. We believe putting in a plan that will be flexible to become either more conservative or more liberal with opening and operation criteria is important. It is also imperative to inform our families of a plan and a schedule.
Please review the document in English and Spanish as well as watch the video to get an understanding of what is really Phase 1 of opening. Phase 1 sets a calendar and an early expectation. This will remain fluid and the details are expected to last through November 20, 2020 with adjustments to daily schedules and operations changing effective January 4, 2021.
